'Galloway hedge', Carmunnock, Lanarkshire |
A 'Galloway hedge' consists of a bank thrown up from ditches on either side and topped by a hedge. The practice, and the associated term, probably originated in that region during the 18th century.
Another method of forming a hedge with minimal input was through 'laying', whereby upright stems would be partially severed and bent sideways to cover gaps in verticals. |
