Famous Teams:
Content and Introduction

Scotland’s two most famous teams are Glasgow Celtic and Glasgow Rangers. Collectively known as the “The Old Firm” they are the largest supported and have won most trophies in Scottish football’s long history. Despite the modern image of both clubs being arch-enemies, it was not always so. For example, Rangers lent their goalkeeper to Celtic for one of the early matches between the two clubs. The sobriquet “The Old Firm” was used to describe how both clubs would try and gain the most advantage for both of them, rather than the good of Scottish football. This situation has, arguably, never changed. Both clubs have benefited from the intense loyalty fuelled, for some, by a sectarian bias.

Scottish football is not just the story of how two teams dominated the game. Many other clubs have made their names throughout its history.
