Livestock pens at Thornhill, Dumfries-shire |
The Glasgow and South Western Railway's line opened in 1850, with a station here at Thornhill. This was therefore the centre for an extensive pastoral hinterland, with rail access to England and west-central Scotland.
In the late 19th century, Thornhill had weekly (Saturday) livestock sales and special sales of sheep in autumn.
In the late 20th century, road transport took over from rail. Many of the market locations established in the railway age remained in use. |
