The 20th century saw towns and cities across Scotland spreading into the surrounding countryside with extensive development of both public and private housing. Pressures on city land values and house prices led city workers to look further and further afield for affordable housing.

Dalgety Bay, on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, is an example of a late-20th century commuter settlement. It was sited close to the Forth Road Bridge (built in 1963) – which enhanced access to Edinburgh – and was eventually provided with its own station, on the Kirkcaldy to Edinburgh line.

Dalgety Bay is unusual in having been a new settlement based on private sector housing alone. Part of the site previously belonged to the military.
