Cumbernauld was one of the new towns created after World War II to move people out of Glasgow’s slum housing, and relocate them in places where new industries were planned. Other new towns were Irvine and East Kilbride.

Before the 1950s, Cumbernauld was a country village. This photograph, taken c. 1960, shows the housing which had been built very quickly. Industry, a shopping centre and leisure amenities were to follow.

New towns which were not related to Glasgow were also built at Livingston and Glenrothes.
