Kinloch Rannoch, Perthshire |
A number of government agencies were active in building villages during the 18th century.
Kinloch Rannoch was an example of a village founded by central government. It was created by the Forfeited Estates Commission, a body set up to administer estates forfeited after the 1745 Rebellion, as a settlement for retired soldiers.
The village did not prosper. The houses in this view, photographed in 1934, are of a much later date. Tourism, forestry and hydro-electricity – which were later backed by state funding – were its eventual salvation. |
