Until recently the island of Eigg, one of the Hebridean Small Isles, was privately owned by absentee landowners. Its population had remained below 100 for the last 50 years, barely enough to sustain a community.

The last laird, Marlin Eckhard-Maruma, was declared bankrupt in 1996. In the following year, the 63 remaining inhabitants were able to buy the island through a specially created Trust.

Since 1997, some vitality and sense of purpose has returned to the small island community. Old houses are undergoing renovation and new ones being built.
