Public access to the countryside has always been easier in Scotland than in England.

As the 20th century progressed, there was a wider interest in health, the outdoors and exercise. The working week was gradually shortened, opening up more scope for weekend trips. The Scottish Youth Hostels Association dates from the 1930s.

Casual use of the countryside – such as this picnic in 1918 – leaves no permanent trace on the landscape. However, more official moves to manage it have imprinted the land with car parks, picnic sites, trails, interpretative panels and all the infrastructure of public access.
