Farm steading, converted into housing, West Lothian |
Many, fine 19th century steadings are ill-fitted to meet modern agricultural needs. Bit by bit they have fallen out of use.
Steading conversions have become a major growth area since the late 20th century. The reason for this is pressures on the existing rural housing stock, difficulties in obtaining planning consent for new-build and the attractiveness of rural locations to urban dwellers.
The quality of conversion varies considerably from site to site. Many of the (once) best preserved steadings were Listed by Historic Scotland, yet even the best and most sympathetic conversion produces an end product which no longer looks like a farm steading. |
