Wallace column, Wallacestone, Falkirk, Stirlingshire |
William Wallace led the Scots army at the Battle of Falkirk, in 1298, where he was defeated by the English.
Although the son of a laird, Wallace has been seen as a man of the people. Fighting with a tiny army against some of the best professional soldiers in Europe, he has always been a heroic figure.
At some time, a stone was placed on the hilltop from which Wallace watched the battle. It was replaced by this column in 1810. |
