Land drainage was a prominent element in the changes to the landscape brought about by agricultural Improvement. Loch Fail was one of three former lochs in a single Ayrshire parish.

The writer of the New Statistical Account for Tarbolton parish reported that Lochlee Loch had been drained and converted to arable land following the closure of the Millburn Mill.

It was also hoped that the other two mills in the parish might close, with the same consequences for Tarbolton Loch and Loch Fail. This was later done. The needs of wildlife were not a priority in those times.
