main image Memorial at Lothbeg, Sutherland
This memorial was erected in 1924, to mark the shooting of the last wolf in Sutherland – and possibly Scotland – by Hunter Polson, c. 1700.

Human intervention, over many centuries, has led to the gradual impoverishment of Scotland's fauna. Beavers were wiped out several centuries ago, wolves more recently. Some species, such as the pine marten, are still under threat, despite protective legislation.

In recent times, there have been discussions on re-introducing some of the lost species.
