In the early stages of the industrial revolution small-scale trades flourished in workshops beside cottages.

The craft of nail making existed in places near ironworks between 1770 to 1850, when industrial nail making machines were introduced.

Nail makers were typically subcontractors to iron masters. They were given lengths of iron bar to cut to length, and then they pointed one end and put a head on the other. They can be seen as a specialist kind of blacksmith who produced only one product.
