main image Limekilns, Burdiehouse, Edinburgh
In the central lowlands of Scotland there are extensive deposits of limestone which have been worked since at least the 16th century.

Limestone was broken up and heated, with alternate layers of coal until the burnt lime could be drawn off. This was then used in building – as cement would now be – and in farming, as a fertiliser.

This group of kilns was well placed to supply the building industry in Edinburgh. The openings for venting and drawing the kilns are large enough to back a cart into.
