main image Brickworks, Armadale, West Lothian
Bricks were made in Scotland in small quantities from medieval times onwards, using supplies of clay on the surface.

By the 19th century, the towns and cities of industrial Scotland were expanding rapidly and this kind of supply became inadequate. Building with stone was expensive alternative.

Coal mines could also produce clay and the coal was a cheap supply of fuel for firing the bricks. Many mines had a small brickworks, though the one in the photograph was quite large.
