Lime was essential to the improvement of the soil, lowering its acidity and making it more productive. Where possible, it was burned with coal before spreading on the fields.

Where coal was too expensive because of transport costs, peat was used instead. Peat produced far less heat and had to be used in smaller kilns like the one in the photograph. The ramp on the left was used to take the lime onto the top of the kiln so that it could be emptied in.
