main image Horizontal grain mill, Lewis, Western Isles
In the mid to late 19th century, there were still hundreds of horizontal grain mills in Lewis and in Shetland. The term 'horizontal' refers to the orientation of the water wheel.

They are sometimes referred to as 'Norse' mills, though their international distribution is far wider than the Norse world.

The stones in the foreground are the remains of the lade – the channel whereby water was fed to the mill. The mill was the low structure beyond, which would have had upper courses of turf.
