main image Wood-turning mill, Finzean, Aberdeen-shire
The huge forests, largely of conifers, around the River Dee and its tributaries, were heavily exploited in the early 19th century. Water-powered sawmills processed the wood into a wide range of products including herring barrels for the fishing industry.

At Finzean the wood was not only sawn, but also turned to make things such as domestic utensils. This mill's speciality was staved wooden buckets, finished by turning on a lathe.
