main image Wright’s shop, Wester Balgedie, Kinross-shire
In the period of Agricultural Improvement the wright (carpenter) became an essential member of the country community.

He had the skills of choosing and working wood, and produced a huge range of things such as carts, gates, doors and furniture. Along with the smith, the wright produced cart wheels: the smith fitted the iron rim onto the wheel produced by the wright.

The wright worked by hand, and so did not need water power. His shop could therefore be placed where it was convenient to his customers.
