An Teallach, Ross-shire |
Until after World War II, the north-west Highlands were almost as easily accessible by sea as by land. There were few visitors. Since then, road improvements have made it much easier to reach them.
The result is that some of the most attractive and impressive mountains such as An Teallach are climbed by thousands of people every year, most of them following the same route. This erodes the soil and degrades the landscape.
Car parks have had to be built at the foot of some mountains: there is a large benefit to the tourist industry. |
