Holiday huts, Balerno, Midlothian |
The proliferation of holiday hut colonies – affectionately known as the 'hutties' – in the inter-war years, gave families of modest means a stake in the countryside.
This photograph dates from the 1930s. The huts look purpose built, but others were more informal, perhaps using adapted railway carriages.
Their users' reliance on public transport is reflected on their siting within range of the (then) extensive railway network. Likewise, they are most common on sites not far from urban centres. |
