Salmon cruive, River Beauly, Inverness-shire |
The cruive is a very ancient device, consisting of a dyke or weir with 'slaps' (gaps) at which a box could be fixed to trap ascending salmon.
By the 14th century, salmon were a significant item of trade and an important commodity to Scotland. In order to conserve stocks, fishing was prohibited at certain times and, with few exceptions, fish traps were outlawed. One of the exceptions was the cruive. |
