Braelangwell Lodge, Strathcarron, Ross-shire |
In the early 19th century, vast areas of the Highlands were turned over to sheep farming. Later in that century, the market for wool collapsed and these lands were given over to deer hunting or grouse shooting.
The wealthy visitors who came to shoot deer were housed in shooting lodges. These were characteristically large houses with extensive outbuildings. Most of these, and the lands around them, have continued to be managed for deer stalking. |
