The parish church, St Ethernan's, was abandoned in 1868 for a new
building. The graveyard continued to be used and now contains many
fine 19th century monuments as well as earlier ones.
Other surviving evidence from the old church is the gabled 1612
burial aisle of Alexander Fraser of Philorth, including a sundial
dated 1625. Such aisles are to be found in several Scottish churches,
commemorating the wealthier heritors (landowners) within the parish.
The graves of humbler beings may have been unmarked. The prosperity
of the area in the 19th century is apparent from the many elaborate
memorials which compete for dominance.
