main image The Dwarfie Stane, Hoy, Orkney
The Dwarfie Stane is a rock-cut tomb. The red sandstone block – from which it was cut – is 8.5m long by 4.5m wide and 2m high. It contains two cells separated by raised kerbs.

The tomb is thought to date from Neolithic times. The separate stone in the foreground may have been used to block the entrance.

Folklore connected to the stone is refered to in Sir Walter Scott's novel, The Pirate, the stone having been the favoured home of Trolld, a dwarf famous in northern sagas.
