Miners' housing, Barrhill Rows, Twechar, Dunbartonshire |
A group of superior houses for coal-miners' families built in the early 1900s.
Housing of this quality was noteworthy enough to feature in a 1911 Government report. The rows are well-spaced, with outhouses and drying greens, good drainage and a clean water supply.
The houses have a single bay frontage and a double pile layout. Most miners' rows came nowhere near this standard. From the 1920s onwards, flatted semi-detached housing was built in mining villages. |
