Tenement housing at New Lanark mills, Lanarkshire |
This urban style was part of a planned settlement housing workers at the adjacent cotton mills.
The earliest tenements date from 1789. Further rows were added thereafter, each containing single-room dwellings.
In its time, New Lanark was famed for its comparatively philanthropic attitude to its workforce. In later times, the village fell into decay but is now undergoing restoration through the New Lanark Conservation Trust. |
