Free Church of Scotland manse, Arinagour, Coll, Argyll |
The Free Church of Scotland seceded from the Church of Scotland in 1843, setting up its own network of churches and manses (houses for clergy). This manse was built in 1884-5.
The Church of Scotland continued to have a minister and manse in every parish. The minister was a man of some standing in the community and the manse was comparable in scale and quality to the larger farmhouses.
Besides the house itself, there were outbuildings like a miniature farm steading with stable, carriage house, barn and byre. A small patch of farmland – the glebe – was also provided as part of the minister's keep. |
