main image Blacksmith's house, Cousland Smithy, Midlothian
Tradesmen employed by a country estate usually had a house provided along with their work-place. The standard of tradesmen's houses was superior to that of farm labourers (hinds) but inferior to farm houses.

The smithy at Cousland is still in working order. This, and the adjacent house, are being restored and maintained by the Cousland Smithy Trust.
