Gate lodge, Innerleithen, Peebleshire |
Lodges were built from the 17th century onwards, to guard the entrances to the landscaped grounds around country houses. The post of lodge keeper was often given to elderly, long-serving employees.
This 19th century lodge has a half-octagonal front window with views up, down and across the public road outside. The gates and adjacent railings are in ornamental cast iron, suggesting something of the grandeur and status of the 'big house' itself.
Much fine ornamental ironwork, from both country and town, was lost when it was removed for recycling during World War II. |
