main image Flagstone dyke, near Thurso, Caithness
This dyke is formed from upended blocks of flagstone. The hard, closely bedded flagstone was laid down some 370 million years ago, in Devonian times.

Flagstone was extensively quarried around Thurso in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was used locally for roofing and walling and exported for use as paving stone. Elsewhere in Scotland, paving stone was also quarried in Angus.
