World Wars I – III
main image Napoleonic defences, Lyness, Orkney
The two Martello towers at Lyness were built in 1813-15 to guard ships in the anchorage on the south side of Scapa Flow. The Napoleonic War was in progress so ships avoided the English Channel and instead went round the west coast of Britain.

Although Martello towers in England were intended to protect the coast against the French, the Orkney ones were built because of the fear of American naval vessels and privateers. Britain and America were at war in 1812-14.

Each tower was designed to hold a single large gun which fired 24lb (10.9kg) cannonballs.
