main image Curtain wall castles, Tantallon, East Lothian
Tantallon was built around 1370 for the Earl of Douglas. It represents the height of feudal power. One man was able to marshal sufficient labour to produce a huge curtain wall of sandstone at a time when most people lived in low houses built of rubble and turf.

The wall was proof against contemporary military technology which was based on the bow and arrow, sword and pike. It did, however, offer an easy target for cannon. In 1651, the castle fell to the guns of Cromwell’s army.
