Blackness Castle dates from the 15th century. Alterations were carried out in 1537-42 by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart. This included provision for defence by artillery, such as the thickening of the south wall.

Further developments in fortifications took place in the reign of Queen Mary (1542-67).

In later times, Blackness Castle was used as a prison. It is now a Historic Scotland property and is open to the public.
