main image Highland pastoral landscape, Upper Strathtay, Perthshire
This is a region dominated by uplands, with much snow and rainfall. Soil is poor and acidic. Apart from river valleys and coasts, there is little scope for arable farming.

Highlanders managed to make the most of their environment by rearing and feeding cattle over the summer months, transporting them to market and selling them on before winter. The sheep farming which partially replaced it in the 18th and 19th centuries benefitted and profited fewer people.

Agriculture is not the only land-user in the Highlands. Other contributions to the highland landscape include water catchment for hydro-electric power, state and private forestry as well as recreational use for shooting and tourism.
