main image South-western dairying landscape, Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire
Although dairy and beef cattle are the dominant element in south-western farming, there are other components, including arable and, in the Uplands, sheep.

This is a predominantly green landscape of small fields, dedicated to permanent pasture. Comparatively high rainfall, heavier soils and more broken topography make the area better suited to grazing than the drier, flatter arable east.

The absense of large field machinery has given no reason to amalgamate fields. Similarly, the absence of large, modern, grain-handling facilities at the steading (farmstead) has allowed small-scale 19th century buildings to survive.
