Beyond the Highlands, lie the gentler, more fertile lowland landscapes of Buchan, the Moray Firth and Caithness.

The underlying geology here is predominantly flagstone. As elsewhere in Scotland this contributes to the built environment as well as to topography.

The mixed arable farming and the subsequent buildings contribute stongly to the landscape of this area.
