Nuclear power station, Torness, East Lothian |
The electric power industry developed all over Britain between 1880 and 1940. Every town or city had its own power station.
The use of long-distance transmission enabled the Government to take over power generation and transmission, and run it on a national basis. Long-distance transmission is efficient only if it is done at a very high voltage (today 275kV).
The Government made decisions about which generating technologies to use, and the first nuclear power station in Scotland was opened at Chapelcross in Dumfries-shire in 1955. Despite increasing public concern about the health and environmental risks in using nuclear fuel, Torness opened in 1988. |
