From 1919, a succession of acts made provision for local authorities to build housing for rent.

Most of the resultant housing was built in towns and cities. But some was also provided by county councils in rural areas.

A further act, in 1924, provided a state subsidy to local authorities building houses, to be passed on to tenants. This led to a dramatic increase in local authority house-building. Further construction continued thereafter. In recent years, many of these houses have been bought by their tenants.
