School and schoolmaster's house, Lintrathen, Angus |
In 1872, control of education passed from the Church to the State. By 1891, Lintrathen was the largest of three schools in the parish, accommodating 101 children.
Splits in the Church of Scotland had led to a massive increase in the number schools, with no overall control. From 1872-1918, the schools were administered by school boards at parish level.
Over the next 100 years, many rural schools would close, though most school buildings survived under new uses. |
