Dalquharran Castle. Dailly. Ayrshire. View from the West Approach.

Adam's original design extended as far as the square castellated turrets. The side wings are late nineteenth century additions.

About this project
The focus of this study is one little-known building by the renowned Scottish architect Robert Adam (1728-1792). The building is the Dalquharran Castle in Ayrshire in Scotland. This was built between 1785 and 1790. In 1967 the lead on the roof was removed to allow the then owners to avoid paying rates on the building.

What can be derived from the project?
This project touches on a number of topics that may be of interest for life-long learning. Coming at the end the eighteenth century, it epitomises the Adam Castle Style of Architecture which arose out of the concepts of the romantic and picturesque which were prevalent at the time.

Onr point of particular interest about this, now ruined building, is that the general deterioration and collapse of the interior has left much of the constructional techniques used to create the building exposed.

Architypal Castle Style House design. A powerful and poetic architectural statement. Its ruination is a great loss to Scotland's architectural heritage.

Main features
The project consists of linked web-pages and a multi-media catalogue, that together present, examine and explain the historical and art-history context of Dalquharran House. An attempt has been made to keep textual explanation and commentary as clear and simple to follow as the (sometimes complex) material allows.

These pages include many illustrations, including digitised copies of the original drawings and images generated from accurate 3D computer reconstructions along with a detailed photographic reord of what still exists. The multimedia catalogue, a resource that continues to grow, links the building into the larger picture of the Architecture of Robert Adam.

Generally clicking on a small image will bring up a larger version of that image in a new window, leaving the page from which the large image was called still open.
