Section 7: The legacy of Bruce ... Tourism in the Antarctic

Port Lockroy

Port Lockroy is one of the favourite tourist destinations for yachts and cruise liners. It was discovered in 1903 by whalers and during the second world war was a secret base.

In 1995, the port was designated a historic site by the Antarctic Treaty. Conservation teams have been there since 1996 and operate from November to March, doing conservation work and monitoring wildlife.

In 1996, 17 yachts and 13 cruise liners visited Port Lockroy. Visitors are guided around the site and can post letters with Antarctic stamps. Souvenirs can also be bought. This makes the base self-financing.
