In recent years, direct marketing by farmers has become a feature of the food trade.

The availability of chilling or freezing facilities and better transport enables farmers to by-pass intermediaries and market direct to customers. Low wholesale prices and a virtual stranglehold by large retailers have encouraged this tendancy.

Other direct marketing schemes involve 'box' schemes. A group of customers buy a box of seasonal vegetables or meats on a regular basis for each household.
