The best slate for roofing was quarried on the Argyll islands of Easdale, Belnahua, Luing and Seil and on the mainland at Ballachulish.

The quarries at Cullipool were worked by the Breadalbane estate until 1866, when they were leased out. They closed in 1965.

Although the industry is now extinct, some of the villages which once housed slate workers have survived – as have the extensive quarries and slate waste tips.
