This area became Scotland's first National Park, inaugurated in July 2002. The Cairngorms is the second area identified for National Park status.

Campaigning for national parks goes back more than 70 years, but when national park legislation was passed for England and Wales, in 1949, Scotland was excluded.

There have been strongly held views both for and against national parks. In 2000, a National Parks (Scotland) Bill was passed unanimously by the Scottish Parliament.
