Canna, Small Isles, Inverness-shire |
In 1981, John Lorne Campbell Gaelic scholar and owner of Canna – gave his island to the National Trust for Scotland.
Canna is an extreme instance of the precarious position faced by small islands with barely sustainable populations. Cleared of about two thirds of its 150 population in the 1840s, Canna has continued to function ever since on a population of less than 50.
Institutional ownership, under the wing of the National Trust for Scotland, may well offer the island community its best chance of survival. |
