The Forestry Commission was established in 1919. In the wake of World War I, Scottish woodlands had been extensively felled. As a state body, the Commission's role was to acquire land and plant it with fast-growing coniferous trees.

This village was created in 1947 to house forestry workers and their families. It is one of around 40 such villages built by the Commission and another state body – the Scottish Special Housing Association.

The first forest park was created in 1935. Others followed after World War II, in recognition of the forests' recreational potential. Concerns over the poor aesthetic quality of mass planting, and the damage done to archaeological and wildlife sites (by both public and private afforestation) latterly led to closer regulation.
