Lairds' housing
main image Bonnet laird's house, Blairhall, Fife
Bonnet lairds were small-scale landowners. The term implied that they wore the clothing of ordinary farmers, but in the Forth Valley they were often men of means who had made their money in commerce.

This late-17th or early-18th century house is of a type commonly found in the area. Its symmetrical, five bay frontage gives it a formal air, with additional detailing in the crow-stepped gables, roll-moulded doorway and moulded chimney heads.

One unusual feature of this, and a few other houses in the area, is the straight, projecting rear stair. Most houses had a spiral 'turnpike' stair. Since 1982, when it was photographed, the house has been restored to its former glory by Marcus Dean.
