After mine workings are abandoned, they gradually (or sometimes suddenly) close up under the weight of the land above. The flooded hollow in the foreground of this photograph is the result of such subsidence.

In built-up areas the effects of subsidence can be more dramatic, and more costly to put right. Chasms may appear in roads and buildings may tilt, split or collapse.

Abandoned coal and oil shale workings extend across large parts of lowland Scotland. In this case the underground workings were part of an oil shale mine. The spoil heaps from this industry remain a powerful presence in the West Lothian landscape.
