Diagram showing section of stone drain |
This
diagram shows the cross-section of a type of stone drain, used before
the introduction of mass-produced tile drains in the mid-19th century.
Most parts of Scotland had a high rainfall and stoney, water-retaining soils. One method used to overcome this was to use stones, in a covered trench, to gather and conduct away surplus waters.
This was a slow and labour-intensive means of making drains. Clay pipes and tiles, once available cheaply and in large quantities, were quicker to lay and less likely to clog. |
